Wicked- Production History
The musical Wicked features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz of Godspell fame, including other productions 'Pippen, Pocahontas and the Prince of Egypt. Wicked is directed by award winning Joe Mantello who was also responsible for 'Assassins Take Me out' and 'Frankie & Johnny in the Clair de Lune'.
Wicked the musical first premiered on Broadway at the George Gershwin Theatre on October 2003
The Wicked show's popularity grew mainly through word of mouth as opposed to mass pre release marketing. Its popularity to make it a must see show was when the show was nominated for 10 Tony Awards including best musical. This was enough to get the public interest to see the production. Unfortunately, the show never actually won any of the awards as it lost out to 'Avenue Q'.
Wicked the Musical managed to recoup its entire production costs and investments by December 2004 after only one year of touring and made its capital return of $14 million. During its first year it grossed income through ticket sales and merchandising of around $56 million. The musical is playing to capacity crowds on virtually every performance and its said to be grossing $1 million a week at the box office. Wicked the musical is said to have busted the previous Broadways weekly grossing record by taking $1,610,934 in one week beating the previous record held by 'The Producers' by Mel Brooks. This record by Wicked was subsequently beaten again and again, and the Broadway's production celebrated its 100th performance on March 23rd 2006.
Wicked began its first US National Tour in 2005 and opened its first permanent production at Chicago's Ford Centre. A second permanent location opened in Los Angeles and eventually led to a total of 4 permanent simultaneous productions across the USA.
The West End production of Wicked opened on September 27th 2006 and simultaneously a greatly condensed 30 minute version of the production opened at the Universal Studios in Osaka Japan. It is planned for full length productions of Wicked to open in Japan, Germany during 2007 and further productions in Holland, Canada and Australia.
Wicked has opened to full houses and rave reviews and has already recorded the highest weekly gross income in ticket sales on Broadway, Chicago and London all for the same week commencing Christmas day 25th of December 2006. Obviously, the musical was sought out to be a children's entertainment.
The original book and novel was written by L Frank Baums in his classic 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' and the stage production is more influenced by the original book as opposed to the movie. The Wizard of Oz of 1939 starred Judy Garland as Dorothy. Wicked the musical explores the Land of Oz the years before Dorothy arrives in the Land of Oz.
