What is Stomp?
Stomp is a percussionist paradise and is a show like no other. Stomp is a combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy. The show does not have a plot or any dialogue or music. Stomp is a series of percussion episodes of sound and rhythm and precision all based around explicit timing.
Stomp performers are silent themselves and don't even use traditional percussion instruments but instead they use everyday household implements to speak for them these everyday implements include, Poles, Brooms, Rubbish Bins, Beer Cans, Zippo Lighters, Plumbers Plunges, Matchboxes even the Kitchen Sink, all used with incredible timing to make the rhythmic sounds to create a symphony of sound.
What is Stomp - Stomp is Music, Theatre, Choreography and a Performing Art - maybe its one or all of these. One thing is for sure that Stomp is based around movement and sound, movement of bodies, objects and sounds all coordinated in such a way to create a cacophony of rhythmic beats and sounds.
Stomp is entertaining and even funny in places as well as enjoyable and is suitable for all ages. Its performers are gifted individuals who are athletic and each distinctive with their own personality even though not one word is uttered. How could you create a musical dance routine around sweeping? With Stomp you can.
Stomp can make music where others see only working tools, Stomp included 8 cast performers who use all manner of household implements to make music incorporating hand clapping, back slapping, foot tapping, that makes Stomp. The cast take everyday items and transforms them into a theatrical event.
Stomp does not contain any narrative or plot but does involve the audience on a journey of participation. After the opening sequence, the audience is introduced to one of the cast members who leads them into a simple clapping response session and the performance progresses the rhythms become more complex. By the end of the evening the audience and performers collaborate on more complicated rhythms which would not have been possible at the beginning as the audience has learned to listen and tune into the wavelength of the percussionist performers. The finale of the show is the sound of passing cars, busses, and the sound of walking people to illustrate that sound is all around us. In every day life there is rhythm and sound and the presence of stomp is part of our everyday life already.
Stomp is what it is pure and simple without any hidden meanings - it's just entertainment, that's Stomp.
