     London Theatre Tickets » List of London Theatres » Shaftesbury Theatre Shaftesbury TheatreThe current Shaftesbury Theatre is situated on Shaftesbury Avenue. It was originally the Princess Theatre and only became the Shaftesbury Theatre when it changed its name in 1963. The Theatre first opened its doors in 1911 and was originally a large capacity theatre of over 2,200. The Theatre became the home of one of the most controversial musicals 'Hair' which ran for a decade until a collapsed ceiling in 1973 led to the possible closure of the theatre for redevelopment. Vigorous campaigns by Equity led to the building being placed on the list of buildings of architectural special interest and was saved from demolition. The Shaftesbury is a popular venue and a firm favourite for its long running musicals. The current capacity of the Shaftesbury Theatre is around 1,400.
