London Theatre Tickets » List of London Theatres » Savoy Theatre Savoy TheatreThe Savoy Theatre is situated on The Strand set back from the road and next to the world famous Savoy Hotel, home to international celebrities when visiting London. The Savoy Theatre originally opened in 1881 and was the brainchild of Richard D'Oyly Carte, who purchased the derelict land, which had been a military prison for 100 years and a hospital for 300 hundred years before that, and was originally the family palace home for the Savoy family, who inherited the land from Henry II in 1286. The Savoy Theatre was built as host to Gilbert & Sullivan's light operas and has continued to be associated with these productions to this day. The Savoy's one claim to fame is it was the very first theatre in the world to be lit by electricity instead of gas in 1881. Thankfully it's still working and the lights still burn bright in the Savoy Theatre. ![]() Savoy Theatre | Performances | Information | Directions | History |
