The Phantom of the Opera - Origin of the Story

The Phantom of the Opera is a musical based upon the book created by theatre legend Andrew Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe with the lyrics being supplied by Charles Hunt and the music by Andrew Lloyd Webber himself.

The Musical production and book by Andrew Lloyd Webber were based on the original novel The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. A French journalist and novelist, Gaston was born in France 1868 and died April 1927 in Nice but managed to write the Phantom of the Opera in 1910, Le Fantome de l'Opera.

This has been the basis of Andrew Lloyds Webber's fascination with the story of a grossly disfigured musical genius who seduces a singer Christine Daae. The Phantom resides in the bowels and subterranean caverns of the Grande Paris Opera house terrorising those who work there. The Phantom tries his best to woo the singer but when she rebuffs his unwanted advances her lover Raoul intervenes and then the Phantom raises the game plan to win her over and to gain her love no matter what the consequences.

The Phantom realises her great potential as a great singer and tries to influence the Opera house to give her the lead part and shows his disapproval when they refuse.

This romantic story is one of seduction and despair and the tale of the mysterious masked phantom that haunts the Opera House,

The musical The Phantom of the Opera is a haunting story of seduction and despair. Set in the 19th Century in the Paris Opera House, the Phantom falls in love with the beautiful soprano singer Christine and lures her away to his subterranean domain. He teaches her to become an even better singer, but the singer has the final decision to stay with the Phantom for ever, or to leave and be with her lover Raoul who is the main patron of the opera. But she has a stark choice. If she leaves, will the Phantom kill Raoul as he threatens to do.
