Royal National Theatre
The National is in fact 3 theatres under one roof, the Olivier is the largest, then the Lyttelton and then the Cottesloe, which is a small theatre.
The Royal National Theatre is situated on the South Bank. It was designed by Denys Lasdun and opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 1976 in her Silver Jubilee Celebration year. The Royal National Theatre is in fact three theatres under one roof:
The National Theatre offers a variety of productions including musicals, classic and new plays.
The aim of the National Theatre is to offer variety, to re-energise the traditions of the British stage, to offer new and exciting productions and raise the levels of acceptance of the audiences and actors alike. The National Theatre tries to recognise the cultural mix and to reflect the diversity of the British multi-racial culture.
The smaller studio theatre, the Cottesloe, provides the space for research and experimentation for the National as a whole with in depth analysis of the audience reactions. By touring the country and abroad, the National Theatre can spread and share its work with audiences worldwide.
The National theatre is a fully non-smoking theatre and offers a bright modernist environment to enjoy the variety of productions.
