Lilian Baylis Theatre - Information & History
The Lilian Baylis Studio Theatre is attached to the Sadler's Wells Theatre situated on Roseberry Avenue and is a forum for students and choreographers to learn and develop their skills. Constructed in 1998 from largely lottery funding this ultra modern building is home to the Sadlers Wells Theatre Company.
The Sadler's Wells is a theatre with a strong, dynamic contemporary programme, which is dedicated to bringing the very best of international and UK dance to London audiences. The present building on Roseberry Avenue in Islington opened in 1998, after a major fundraising programme, which was supported by Lottery funding.
The Lilian Baylis Studio Theatre holds a series of workshops and productions throughout the year. The Lilian Baylis Studio Theatre can be accessed through the stage door reception entrance and is centred around the Garden Court Café. The Lilian Baylis Studio Theatre is also available for private hire for conferences and seminars, with access to 8 separate areas for syndicated sessions.
The Lilian Baylis Studio Theatre is fitted with the latest sound and lighting equipment. The raked seating can be retracted at the press of a button, thus giving maximum flexibility to conference organisers and performing companies. The Lilian Baylis Studio Theatre is a unique venue which offers event organisers with an intimate and versatile venue suitable for conferences, product launches, awards ceremonies and seminars.
The Lilian Baylis Studio Theatre is also a fully working theatre and lends itself perfectly to smaller performances of dance, opera or drama productions. The hire of the theatre includes three backstage rooms, which can be used as professional dressing rooms, or as an organiser's office and speakers retiring rooms. The venue is fully accessible for people with physical and sensory disabilities. With a total seating capacity of only 200 it is both ultra modern and intimate. The auditorium also offers a presentation area in front of the audience of 15m x 9m, giving ample room for back projection.
The seating of the Lilian Baylis Studio Theatre fully retracts to create a flat floor space for board room or cabaret-style meetings. The Lilian Baylis Studio Theatre is perfect for evening receptions and for themed dinner parties. Seating for such events is to a maximum of 160 people on round tables of 10, or 100 for dinner dances, or alternatively, as a reception style space for up to 350. The Lilian Baylis Studio Theatre truly offers a unique venue designed for a multitude of functions. I wonder what Victorian theatre designers would have thought of this theatre.
Outside the theatre there are two convenient areas which can be used as registration points and the nearby Stage door café offers refreshment and light snacks which can be purchased throughout the day.
Garden Court
Adjacent to the Lilian Baylis Studio Theatre, this light and airy space offers an additional area in which to serve reception drinks prior to any evening event and can also be used for pre and post show parties around a performance or evening meeting.
