Les Miserables - the StoryLes Miserables follows the tale of a character Jean Valjean who was released on parole after 19 years on the chain gang discovers that whilst he is on parole he must endure the injustice of holding a yellow ticket by law which will condemn him to be a social outcast. His only friend seems to be the Bishop of Digne who treats Valjean with respect despite this yellow ticket and even helps him to face his embittered feelings of injustice. Valjean repays this kindness with a foolish act of stealing some silver from him. Valjean is caught by the police and to Valjean's astonishment the Bishop lies to the police to save Valjean from a certain fate in prison. He even gives Valjean a couple of silver candlesticks. This overwhelming act of kindness and sympathy for a fellow human being led Valjean to change his ways and to start his life anew.
