Dirty Dancing - The Backdrop

Dirty Dancing is based during the year 1963 in mid America where summer camps were the place to go for the family holiday and foreign travel was unheard of. The average American family would go to a mountain summer resort or vacation location where they could participate in sports and games and learn how to canoe or skate, play party games and even learn to ballroom dance.

It was a time when young blossoming girls under 16 were called Baby by everyone and where sexual activity was unheard of let alone association with boys. Innocence and naivety were the order of the day. America was going through a troubled time of change with the swinging sixties.

Dirty Dancing the musical is based upon the 1987 cult movie which thrilled mainly girls and woman alike who fell in love with the iconic duo stars Patrick Swayzee and Jennifer Grey's illicit yet innocent love affair which crossed the barriers of age and backgrounds much to the disgust of her naturally protective doctor father.

She had danced the Mambo and she carried those water melons and she fell in love. That's this simple story of 'Baby' who expected a normal summer holiday with her family but it was a holiday that would change her life for ever and a coming of age experience. Dirty Dancing was an iconic movie which has now made it to the stage and it would seem that it's causing a flood of theatregoers eager to share that experience all over again.

Dirty Dancing the Movie

The movie film was an instant success with love struck young girls especially, and it became a movie classic for the majority of the female gender, and some males, and through sales on video (before the advent of DVD's), it became a must have video in any female collection. Dirty Dancing was a regularly watched movie at home on a girls' evening special. It's one of those movies that was watched over and over again and the simple love story of a innocent young girl from a mid west American respectable family with a roguish mid twenties dance teacher and rebel at a summer holiday camp. The ensuing battle of respectability followed and exposure of the under cover mambo and 'dirty dancing' practiced by the dancing youngsters who live and work at the summer camp, came to the fore.

The film Dirty Dancing was one of those iconic movies of the decade and is still enjoying regular rescreening on TV and now on stage much to the delight of those now older married love struck teenagers who simply fell in love with that hunky Patrick Swayzee from the wrong side to the track who is unexpectedly joined together with young Jennifer Grey.
