Chicago - Story

The Storyline of Chicago starts during the roaring twenties and the beginning of the Prohibition era when Chicago was buzzing with Hot Jazz and cold bloodied killers. The audience are introduced to Velma Kelly a twenties vaudeville performers who killed her female other half of the sister act when she was caught with Velma's husband. The story develops with Velma and Roxie who become friends and they both become embroiled with jealous behaviour and finally end up in jail together. They decide to join forces and become the new vaudeville sister act upon their discharge. Billy Flynn the lawyer takes on the defence for Roxie also becomes involved with her outside the court room and craves for popularity and gain notoriety in the process

Velma and Roxie fall apart and jealousy grows as Velma can't understand why Roxie is having more success than her after a series of events and their separate growth in fame. They both settle their differences and end up joining forces and become the 'Sister Act' they originally planned

Basis of the Chicago Story

The Characters of Velma was based on true life murderess Gaertner who was a real life cabaret singer. She was accused of murdering Walter Law who was found slumped over the wheel of Gaertners abandoned car on March 12th 1924. Police officers testify they witness Gaernter getting in to her car, then the sound of 2 gunshots and they see her leave the car with Walter Law dead in the car with a bottle of gin and loaded murder weapon on the floor. At the Trial Gaertner was actually acquitted of the murder and walked free. It was this courtroom extravaganza of the cabaret celebrity star being found not guilty despite the evidence which led to Dallas Watkins writing the story entitled 'Roxie Hart' which opened as a stage play on Broadway in 1942 starring Ginger Rogers as Roxie.

Following this first production Gwen Verdon asked her husband Bob Fosse about the possibility of writing a musical about this story of Roxie Hart. The permission by Dallas Watkins was repeatedly refused until she died in 1969 but Dallas Watkins in her Will deemed that the rights to the story of Roxie Hart would be bequeathed to Gwen Verdon and Bob Fosse to enable them to create their musical after all.
