Bloomsbury Theatre - Information & History
The Bloomsbury Theatre is a new style theatre and was officially opened in 1968. It was originally opened as the Central Collegiate Building Auditorium, but this was soon abbreviated to The Collegiate Theatre. It was then renamed in 1982 to The Bloomsbury Theatre to reflect more its location in the Bloomsbury area of London as well as the artistic associations with the name of Bloomsbury.
With a relatively short time line the Bloomsbury Theatre doesn't share the architectural history associated with the majority of the theatres in London. It has however had a star studded short history and it has been the early stage for some of the UK's greatest comedy talent. The Bloomsbury Theatre has staged performances including talent like Lily Savage, Eddie Izzard, Jeremy Hardy, Mel & Sue, Jo Brand, John Shuttleworth and even the glove puppet from the famous 60's TV children's show; Sooty!
The Bloomsbury provides a very relaxed and modern ambience and the Bloomsbury has gained a reputation for presenting productions from small scale Opera to stand up ground breaking Comedy. More recently the Bloomsbury Theatre has hosted performances by comedians including Jimmy Carr, Harry Hill and Ricky Gervais, who have all chosen the Bloomsbury Theatre as their choice of venue. The Bloomsbury has also hosted numerous musical live events including The Zombies and lead singer from the 60's rock band The Kinks, namely Ray Davies.
The Bloomsbury Theatre hosts a variety of performances and events to suit all tastes. From comedy to drama, music to dance with 535 comfortable seats the Bloomsbury provides plenty of room to stretch your legs in an airy well designed modern building without the obscuring pillars. Quite the opposite to the somewhat cramped conditions, albeit quaint, in the older and more traditional West end Theatres.
The Bloomsbury Theatre is owned and operated by the University College of London and is an integral part of the University campus and environment. Attracting students to the Bloomsbury Theatre is hardly difficult, and the Theatre hosts exclusive student productions for 12 weeks every year.
Today the Bloomsbury seems to endeavour to challenge the traditional production styles of its West End neighbours with numerous productions and perhaps as many as 20 different companies staging events at the Bloomsbury in a month.
The diversity and youth of inspiration leads the Bloomsbury to offer productions that are both diverse and ground breaking and certainly not ordinary in any capacity. If you're looking to witness a production which is new and innovative, then you need look no further than the Bloomsbury Theatre.
