Blood Brothers - Production History
The original production was commissioned by Paul Harman's Young People's Theatre Company to be presented to Secondary Schools. The writer and creator was Willy Russell. The first school to experience the 'Blood Brothers was the Fazakerley Comprehensive School in Liverpool in November 1981.
Following the initial success Willy saw the potential of this powerful story and went about developing the work into a full blown musical for the big stage throughout 1982 by re writing the lyrics and composing the musical score himself. The first theatre to stage the Blood Brothers stage production was the Liverpool Playhouse in 1983 starring Barbara Dickson. The show was only an average success.
The production was transferred to London in a hope to capture the imagination of a wider audience and opened at the Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, but despite the wider audience opportunity, the show Blood Brothers first West End performance only ran for 6 months before it was decided to close. It was recognised that Blood Brothers did have something special as the summer season at the Lyric Theatre earned awards for the author-composer Willy Russell and for the performance of the lead actress Barbara Dickson.
Then came a new face on the scene when Bill Kenwright took over the Blood Brothers production and took the show on a national year long tour of the UK's local theatres in an attempt to gain popularity. Finally, the Blood Brothers production reopened at the Lyric Theatre in 1988 after a short period it transferred to the Phoenix Theatre where it has remained ever since.
Famous previous actors and actresses and singers that have starred in Blood Brothers the musical include female lead singers as the starring role the mother Mrs Johnstone have included lead singers, Petula Clark, Carole King, Helen Reddy, Stephanie Lawrence, Kiki Dee, Lyn Hobson, Siobhan McCarthy, and even four of the Nolan sisters.
